Guyana will continue to invest in health and education sectors -President tells Washington forum

Acknowledging that there is an active recruitment of nurses from Guyana and some challenges in the Education sector, President Irfaan Ali this morning said his government has started a process to ensure that Guyanese who are interested in becoming teachers and nurses, are properly trained and compensated.

The President was responding to questions this morning at the Atlantic Council Studios in Washington where he was discussing Guyana’s role as an emerging leader.

The President said Guyana has been investing heavily in these two sectors to ensure that the country can produce the best Health and Education services.

“We are building out more Nursing schools, we are going to finance their education to become a nurse then we are going to employ them at the end of that in the system and is the same thing for teachers, we have announced a national policy in which we are going to invest to have all our teachers become trained teachers and then trained graduates,” the President said.

In addition, the President said government has also been working on a number of other training programmes to ensure that Guyanese are properly able to respond to various challenges.

He said his government is still working to ensure that the Tertiary Education is free, so that more Guyanese can receive a tertiary level education.

“All of this would impact positively, the quality of Education, the quality of Health Care and raise the skill level of the country. At the end of the thing one of the main thing is to support the enhancement of disposable income and that is what is important for families, how do we create policies that enable families, especially poorer families to have more disposal income, so that they can have a better quality of life,” the President said.

Further, the President said that the country’s oil and gas resources are currently being used to build a competitive economy, once which will see little reliance on the energy sector.
