Harmon warns Speaker of any effort to obstruct Opposition’s work in Parliament

New Leader of the Opposition Joe Harmon sounded a warning this afternoon to the new Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir about any effort to obstruct the work of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

Just after being elected unopposed as Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Harmon said the Opposition is pleased with the election of Nadir as Speaker but wants him to ensure everything goes right in the 12th Parliament.

“We feel comfortable with you being elected as Speaker and we will give you our support, but I want you to recognise this caveat, that once we recognize that things don’t go right, then you will see another side of this side here, and we hope that we don’t have to get to that point”, Harmon said.

Mr. Harmon said his hope is that the Opposition will be allowed to get its work done in the Assembly, adding that “we hope that we don’t have to be fighting against barriers and obstacles which are contrived to deny us the right to speak on the floor in the National Assembly.”

He said he will provide the quality of leadership that is necessary at this time for all of Guyana. He thanked the members of the Opposition for reposing confidence in him to serve as the Leader of the Opposition.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir has indicated that he will serve the Parliament fairly.

The APNU+AFC has 31 seats in the 65 member National Assembly. The joinder list of ANUG, LJP and TNM has one seat, with the governing People’s Progressive Party in control of the other 33 seats.
