Hinds ready if asked to be #2 again for PPPC

After serving as Guyana’s Prime Minister for over two decades, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds says he has lost no interest in retaining the post for as long as Guyanese would let him.

Speculation is rife as it relates to who the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) will field as its Prime Ministerial Candidate for the May 11 general and regional elections and while there is talk that a woman is likely to run for the post, PM Hinds says he remains ready and willing to continue serving in the position.

“I think the answer I have been told to put is that I remain always ready to serve in any post that my fellow Guyanese think I might serve,” the Prime Minister told Newssource on Saturday.

The PPP/C has already confirmed that President Donald Ramotar will lead the Party into the upcoming elections as its Presidential Candidate. What is known is that the PM Candidate will be drawn from the Civic component of the PPP/C.

A dodgy Hinds refused to say if he is a part of ongoing discussions on the topic. “The decision is not mine it is my fellow Guyanese… but I remain committed,” Hinds said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues – Birkett and Presidential Advisor on Governance, Gail Teixeira told a news conference last week that they are yet to consider any appointment as Prime Ministerial Candidate for the Party, though they are Civic members.

It is believed that if none of the these two women are given the post then Minister within the Ministry of Finance Juan Edghill also stands a good chance having served the Party for several years.

Whoever is chosen will replace incumbent Hinds who has held the position almost continuously since 1992 following the October elections that year which was won by an alliance of the PPP and Hinds’ group, Civic.

He also briefly served as President of Guyana in 1997. He was awarded Guyana’s highest national award, the Order of Excellence (O.E.) in 2011.

Meanwhile, the opposition political parties are yet to announce their candidates but are currently in talks to form a pre elections coalition.
