Hinds regrets not making earlier announcement about decision not to contest elections

Chairman of the Change Guyana Party, Nigel Hinds today said he regrets that he did not earlier inform his supporters and the nation that he was no longer going to be a candidate for the upcoming elections.

He announced on Sunday that he is a dual citizen, holding Guyanese and US citizenship and is not in a position to surrender his US citizenship because of a medical condition and the treatment that he wants to be done in the US.

Hinds who was the party’s Prime Ministerial Candidate told reporters today he had made his decision to step aside as a Candidate since the 15th December after consulting his family about his medical condition.

His announcement about not serving as a candidate any longer only came after questions were raised about his absence from the party’s list of candidates that was submitted on nomination day.

He said he did not sign any nomination declaration and therefore had done nothing wrong.

Mr. Hinds said he remains supportive of the party he co-founded and its Presidential Candidate Robert Badal.

“We have a lion in the form and person of Robert Badal”, he told the media as he also announced that he will be campaigning for his party.

The recently formed party is one of the many new parties that will be contesting the 2nd March elections. Party officials said they have been given the all-clear by the Elections Commission to contest the polls and will now be looking to announce a new Prime Ministerial Candidate soon.
