Hughes considering additional course of action to protect Sgt. Bascom; President still to respond to witness protection request

The Police Sergeant also refuted the statement made by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum that he did not arrest one of the early suspects in the Fagundes murder probe. Bascom said he was the one who picked up and took in that suspect and the Crime Chief is well aware of that.

Hughes considering additional course of action to protect Sgt. Bascom; President still to respond to witness protection request

With President Irfaan Ali still to respond to the request by Attorney Nigel Hughes for his client, Police Sergeant Dion Bascom to be granted witness protection, the Attorney said other avenues of protection will have to be examined since threats remain over the life of the Police Sergeant who has made startling allegations of corruption and cover-up in the Guyana Police Force.

“If a citizen comes to you and say I need help, somebody is threatening to kill me, and you say I will deal with that, that I will go away and come back…Mr. Bascom cannot wait inevitably for the President to get around”, Hughes said.

The Attorney said it is important for his client to be protected and he is still hoping that the President will act and ensure witness protection is granted.

Asked about whether he intends to reach out to the Diplomatic community, Attorney Hughes said various avenues will be examined.

“I don’t want to be attending a funeral, giving a tribute to Mr. Bascom about how brave he was for standing up to corruption in the Guyana Police Force and all of us are wailing and he is gone”, the Attorney said.

Hughes and Bascom spoke to the media today at a press conference hosted at the Attorney’s office. The Police Sergeant who remains on sick leave said he remains concerns about threats being made against him since he spoke out last weekend publicly on the alleged cover-up of the murder investigations related to the execution of biker, Ricardo Fagundes.

Bascom has implicated a senior Police Officer, a city businessman and the businessman’s security guard in that cover-up. All three have denied the allegations.

The Police Sergeant is standing by his story and today said that he had informed other senior officers about his concern about the Fagundes murder probe, but there was no action.

He said he decided to speak out as more threats were being made against him.

Bascom said “I decide to talk out because if I gon dead, at least let the truth be told”.

The Police Sergeant also refuted the statement made by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum that he did not arrest one of the early suspects in the Fagundes murder probe. Bascom said he was the one who picked up and took in that suspect and the Crime Chief is well aware of that.

Attorney Nigel Hughes has maintained his call for a Commission of Inquiry to examine the statements made by his client, Sgt. Dion Bascom.

He said it has become clearer in recent days that the Guyana Police Force is not capable of handling the probe.
