Attorney Nigel Hughes who is representing the interests of the Police Sergeant who has made damning claims of a Police cover-up of a major murder investigation believes that the Police Commissioner’s dismissal of his client’s claims in the absence of an investigation proves that the Police Force is incapable of conducting a probe into the statements by Sergeant Dion Bascom.
“The Police have demonstrated by the contents of their statement that they are incapable of conducting any form of independent investigation by reason of the fact that they have already arrived at a conclusion without even speaking to Mr. Bascom. So any suggestion that the Police are capable, whether in the form of the Office of Professional Responsibility or any other iteration that they are capable of conducting an independent investigation has been clearly blown out of the water by the words of the Guyana Police Force”, Hughes told News Source.
The Police Commissioner in a statement last evening said the allegations that senior Officers played a role in covering-up the murder investigations related to the shooting death of Ricardo Fagundes are “unfounded”. The Top Cop also dismissed the Police Sergeant as compromised.
Attorney Hughes said he had reached out to the Police for Bascom to provide his statement, but there was no response.
“They clearly cannot in this matter or the matter related to Mr. Fagundes even remotely pretend to conduct an independent investigation. I think that now the President should look at the statement of the Guyana Police Force and arrive at the conclusion that clearly there is merit to the claims made by Mr. Bascom and that the Police Force is incapable of conducting an independent investigation and use the powers vested in him under the Disclosures Act to establish and independent investigation”, Hughes stated.
The Police Sergeant who has implicated senior Police Officers in an alleged cover-up of the murder investigations, has also directly implicated a city businessman and one of his security agents in the murder of the popular biker who was gunned down outside the Palm Court night spot last year.
All of those implicated have denied the claims by the Police Sergeant and have threatened to sue him. The Police Detective has said he is standing by his story.
