Interventions in education sector are bearing fruit with improved NGSA results -says CXC

Significant improvements were recorded in the four NGSA subjects of Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English at this year’s examinations, the Caribbean Examinations Council has reported.

Twenty students from across six regions topped the country at this year’s NGSA exams, securing a perfect score.

At the release of the NGSA results on Friday, the Director of Operations at the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC), Dr Nicole Manning, said overall improvements were seen in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English.

It was explained that of the 15,706 students, who wrote the English assessment, 73.08% gained 50% and over, an increase when compared to the 69.25% recorded in 2025, while in Social Studies, the overall performance increased from 64.77% in 2025 to 65.28% in 2026.

65.38% of the students gained 50% and over in Science, compared to 63.70% in 2025.

In Mathematics, the students’ overall performance increased from 55.51% to 59.8%. According to Dr Manning, there were sharp increases in the number of students that gained perfect scores in the four subjects.

“For the Sciences, we are seeing here a move from 63.70% to 65.38% of candidates earning 50% and above. Likewise a sharp increase in the number of candidates receiving full scores for Science, moving from 227 to 417 – with no candidate receiving zero…Mathematics….this is where we saw the candidates moving from 55.51% to 59.8%. This speaks volume not only at this stage but also volume for what we know we would see in five years’ time,” Dr Manning said.

The NGSA exams are administered and marked by CXC.

Dr Manning, in offering the analytical review of the students’ performance, applauded the Government on the inventions made in the Education Sector, noting that those interventions are bearing fruit.

“So, this gradual improvement that you are seeing year on year is something you should be happy about because it is saying to you, whatever the interventions you are doing, they are having impact, and that is what it is all about,” Dr Manning said.

Minister of Education, Sonia Parag said the 2026 cohort created history, producing the country’s best and strongest results to date.

“You have made history, record breaking history. You have produced a truly record breaking performance this year, and for that, you deserve every word of praise and a mighty round of applauds. These are the best and strongest National Grade Six Assessment Results, not only over the past five years but this is the best results that have ever been recorded in our country’s history,” Minister Parag said.

She said today’s results represent the investments made by the Government, and the foundation laid by her predecessor, Minister Priya Manickchand.

Minister Parag said Minister Manickchand laid the foundation for the transformation of the Educator.

“Today’s achievements did not happen by accident or by chance. It is a product of years of sustained investment in education. A commitment that has always been central to the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government, which, whenever it has served in Government, and one that has been strengthened even further since 2020 under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali. And I pause here to also recognize my colleague and former Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand – the work undertaken by my colleague laid a strong foundation for the transformation of education in our system,” the Education Minister said.

Minister Parag said since taking office in 2025, she has built on that foundation laid with a number of interventions focused on literacy and numeracy. She said literacy and numeracy camps were held for both parents and pupils, while teacher training was significantly enhanced.
