Jagdeo plans to work with Trump administration to counter “lies” about Guyana Government

US President-elect Donald Trump is two months away from being sworn in, but Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo is already planning to engage the incoming Trump administration to counter what he considers to be “lies” that have been told on the Guyana Government.

Mr. Jagdeo opened his weekly press conference at Freedom House this afternoon by congratulating the US President elect and expressing the eagerness of the Guyana Government to work with his Government.

“We would also work with his administration to debunk a lot of the lies being peddled by some forces, for the past several years they have been meeting U.S government officials and have been telling a bunch of lies, almost every mission that has coming to Guyana from the United States of America they have a standard mantra, that the PPP is racist, corrupt, incompetent and squanders oil money, this is their standard narrative with every mission that comes to Guyana,” Jagdeo said.

The Vice President believes that there has been an abuse of privilege by some Opposition activists who would frequently complain to US authorities about the Guyana Government. He said the government will look to set the record straight on those issues.

“So, we are looking forward to continue to debunk all the lies, particularly with the new administration that will take office in January of next year in the United States of America, we will point out, for example abuse of the system like Burke and others who constantly go and complain to law enforcement authorities to complain,” Mr. Jagdeo said.

Further, Mr. Jagdeo said the Guyana Government will also be seeking closer ties with the new US Government in a number of areas in the interest of both countries.

“We are looking forward to working with his administration, we had a good working relationship with his administration in the past and we are looking forward to continuing that relationship and growing it. We believe that the United States of America is a very close partner of Guyana and therefore, we have to work to build that partnership continuously,” Jagdeo said today.

The Guyana Government has found itself on the defensive in many instances over the past few years, as complaints have mounted against it with the US Government and the international community. The Government has faced serious questions from the US on allegations of corruption and discrimination.
