Jamaica is helping Guyana to develop its intelligence infrastructure, Police Commission Seelall Persaud announced at an Award Ceremony
to commemorate the force’s 177th Anniversary on Wednesday.
The Top Cop said he was happy with the developments in the area of crime intelligence which have contributed to solving many serious crimes in recent months.
His disappointment was that the same could not be said for the force’s security intelligence.
The Police Commissioner explained that as a consequence, Guyana reached out to the Jamaican Force Constabulary for help with its intelligence infrastructure.
The Police Commissioner there agreed to offer the assistance and with financial support from UNICEF officers from Jamaica came to Guyana to carry out an assessment.
“We were presented with a draft report and expects the final report shortly,” Persaud said.
He told the gathering that the Force intends to proceed with implementing the recommendations as soon as possible which should result in better intelligence gathering.
“The Force is also looking to further develop its capacity to deliver the highly expected services,” Persaud added.
At the same time the Commissioner reported an 18 percent reduction in serious crimes relative to same period last year.
He said that decrease is reflected in every category of serious crimes.
There was also a 70% clear-up on murders reported and a number of cold cases were solved, some of which occurred more than a decade ago.
