Judge throws out PPP’s effort to remove AFC backers from nomination list

The Guyana Elections Commission has reported that Justice Navindra Singh has dismissed the case brought against the Chief Elections Officer and the Returning Officer for Bloomfield /Whim, over the backers list for the Alliance For Change.

The case was filed by the PPP, claiming that a number of persons were misled by the AFC into offering support for the AFC’s list of candidates. The PPP wanted the names to be removed from the list.

But after receiving a police report and statements, the Judge indicated that there was no evidence of fraud, trickery or threat.

He dismissed the matter, noting that there was no basis to ask the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield to ‘strike out’ the names of the nominators from the AFC’s Lists of Candidates.

The AFC had always maintained that it had not tricked anyone into offering support for the party’s candidates. The party claims that after names were released on nomination day, the PPP raised issues.

In response to the dismissal of its case, the PPP last evening claimed that the police report on the issue was inadequate and did not capture all of the thoughts of the persons who provided statements.

Those statements would have been signed off by the persons who provided them.
