Leaking gas cylinder hose suspected to be cause of explosion at East Ruimveldt house

Investigations are ongoing into an gas cylinder explosion that leveled a section of an East Ruimveldt house on Saturday morning, leaving 56-year-old Troy Alleyne nursing multiple injuries.

It is suspected that a damaged gas cylinder hose might have been responsible for the incident.

Alleyne was at home with his wife, Melissa Alleyne, and their two children when the incident occurred on Sunday morning. However, he was the only one who suffered injuries.

According to the wife, Melissa Alleyne, her husband remains in a critical condition, but is now more responsive.

She explained that they were asleep in the home when she was awakened by the smell of cooking gas. The woman said she alerted her husband and he left their room for the kitchen area on the lower flat to probe the smell.

She said moments later, the house was rocked by the loud explosion, and she immediately grabbed her children and ran to safety.

The husband was rescued with multiple burns to his body.

“I was upstairs, and couple seconds after boom! While I upstairs, all I seeing is red and everything moving. Like flame red and everything moving because I went in the room under the kitchen and he went downstairs and he get the full impact,” the woman said.

The woman said while still responsive at the hospital, her husband detailed that the explosion was as a result of a leak in the gas hose.

“I seh troy is where the gas been smelling from. Troy tell me is downstairs by we, in we kitchen the hose been leaking,” the mother of two explained.

The Guyana Fire Service is currently conducting its investigation into the cause of the explosion.

However, based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that gas in the atmosphere may have been ignited when the flipped the switch on the gas stove.
