Linden handyman takes rap for 2700 pound marijuana, sentenced to 3 yrs

A Linden handyman who is best known for spending more time behind bars at the Camp Street jail than he spends time out  of jail, was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $30,000 after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of over 2,700 pounds of Jamaican marijuana at a house in Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara.

The man Dexter Daniels aka “Cockie”, was sentenced on Friday when he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. On Thursday he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty but one day later, he appeared to have made a decision to take the rap for the largest marijuana bust in Guyana in over 10 years. No one else has been charged in connection with the case.

Dexter Daniels is a well-known guest of the Camp Street jail and has spent several sentences there in the past few years for larceny, possession of stolen items and break and entry.

He was reportedly found in the  Diamond East Bank yard where the high-grade marijuana was found. He may have been the “look out man”, one law enforcement agent said.

The charge against the man and his eventual guilty plea came as a shock to many Lindeners who know him and are convinced that he must have taken the “fall for some one or other people”. One Linden man who knows the convict well told News Source “this  is a big laugh, Cockie is known for doing handy work, cleaning yard, weeding yard, fetching garbage and plenty petty crimes. There is no way he could have accumulated all that jammy and there was no way he even knew he was guarding it, cause they would have found some ashes for some of those pounds”.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit is continuing its investigation into the drug bust and intends to question a number of other people in connection with the case.
