A time of celebration has been turned into mourning for a Georgetown family following the shooting death of 40-year-old Martial Arts Instructor and bodyguard Garfield Newton.

A police report stated that Newton was walking along Campbell Street in Alboustown on Christmas Eve night after uplifting gold and silver jewellery from a goldsmith when he was accosted by three men.

Newton was also armed with a firearm that belongs to the company where he worked. He was relieved of the jewellery and firearm and shot to the chest.

The three suspects escaped from the scene without a trace and emergency services were summoned.

The EMTs pronounced the man dead at the scene. The goldsmith who was visited by the Newton just before he was shot dead, said he was informed about the shooting by a teenager in the area, who told him that the man who just left his business had been shot.

Investigations are ongoing.
