Mazaruni Prison gets boat for emergency purposes

With the expansion works taking place at the Mazaruni Prison, the Government today handed over a new boat valued at $10.9 million to the Guyana Prison Service.

The boat is expected to cater for the transfer of prisoners during medical and other emergencies. It will be based at the Mazaruni prison, which is located in the Essequibo River.

Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels applauded the move by the Public Security Ministry to acquire the boat.

He explained that in the past, the Prison Service resorted to using the boats belonging to the Coast Guard and the Police Force, but now with its own boat, it will be able to better deal with the transportation of prisoners.

“ I’m confident that with the addition of this vessel to Mazaruni Prison it will significantly boost the capacity or capability of the location, especially as it relates to responding to emergency”, Mr. Samuels said.

Following the jailbreak and fire that gutted most of the Camp Street jail two years ago, a decision was made to expand the Mazaruni prison to cater for more inmates.

The expansion works have started.
