Investigators from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and the Police Force have travelled to the Region 8 mining district of Konawuk in the Mahdia Backdam to probe the death of a young miner.

Dead is 19-year-old, Trenton Sebastian.

He died after being completely covered with soil while digging a mining pit along with other miners who were also clearing the area of trees.

The incident took place on Monday  just after 3:30pm.

Reports out of the area indicate that the teenaged miner and four others were cutting through a mine face, which involves the washing of the mine wall to get to the cold, and at the same time clearing trees in the area.  The combined activities resulted in a section of the mine collapsing and completely covering the young man.

An official in the mining sector explained to News Source that miners are repeatedly warned about clearing trees in the same areas where they have already started digging for gold.  The mine where the incident took place is owned by Sherwin Grenada.

Over the past year, there have been a number of deadly mining accidents which resulted in a Commission of Inquiry being conducted into local mining practices. That Commission offered several recommendations for improved and safer mining practices.
