Attorney General Anil Nandlall has dismissed the corruption claims against a number of Government officials by a billionaire gold trader as “fake”.
The businessman, Junior Baksh, made the allegations of illegal gold trading and other corruption claims in an interview with journalist, Travis Chase. The video was released by activist, Melissa Atwell on her page. The interview was reportedly done in March.
The Attorney General is seeing a political connection between the allegations made in the video and the WIN party, although the interview was recorded months before the party’s formation.
“A political connection has already been identified linked to the WIN party. In fact, the interviewee disclosed that he did this interview for a particular purpose and for a particular occasion and it was not supposed to be disclosed. So, the intrigue continues and lawsuits are going to come from every direction no doubt and we will eventually get to the bottom of all of us,” the Attorney General said.
Two other businessmen who were named in the recorded interview as alleged accomplices in a number of corrupt activities, have since denied any wrongdoing and have threatened legal action over the statements made against them.

The businessman, who was interviewed, has stated that the interview should have only been released with his permission or if he was harmed. He said he apologized to the President back in June over statements made against the President’s mother. However, he has not clarified any of the other allegations he made.
But the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, is now laying blame at the feet of rights activist, Melissa Atwell, who released the video of the interview on her social media pages two days ago.
“But what I find particularly disturbing are the allegations made that seek implicate the mother of his excellency the President and then Melissa Atwell, posting the President’s mother photograph on her platform publishing denigrating and very disrespectful comments of an concerning the President’s mother, thereby encouraging who engage on her platform to make similarly disparaging comments about the President’s mother. I want to condemn that type of behaviour in the strongest possible term,” the Attorney General stated.
Mr. Nandlall predicts that there will be scores of lawsuits that will be filed by persons implicated, as they seek to clear their names.
“And I hope, that firm and appropriate actions will be taken against the publisher of those images and disparaging and humiliating remarks as well as Meta Facebook, because we have to have standards and there has to be limits, beyond which none of us should travel, irrespective of what side of the political or whatever divide we are situated, there must be sacred grounds that we should not travel,” Nandlall noted.
Recalling that he had his own troubles on social media, Mr. Nandlall said he has already obtained a default judgement in one matter over statements made against him on social media.
