NIS launches online system to check contributions

The National Insurance Scheme (NIS), under the leadership of a new Board headed by Dr. Surendra Persaud, on Thursday re-launched its online contribution checking system with new features that allows an employee to check their contribution and make queries online.

The online database was last updated on October 31 and reflects contributions posted up to October 15.

Another update will be done in January 2016 with the Scheme promising real time interface in the not so distant future.

NIS is placing both employees and employers on notice that the contribution details provided via the web is only for information purposes and should not be used as an official statement.

Any difference in online and official statement should be corrected when the online database is next updated or by submitting a query.

To access the service, contributors will need to be registered and will be provided with a username and password to access their information.

The website can be accessed at www.contributions.nis.org.gy

Commenting on the new and improved system which was initially launched in April 2015, NIS General Manager, Doreen Nelson reasoned that with this initiative comes new responsibility.

She explained that the responsibility is shared between the Scheme, employers and employees. “The responsibility of employer is to ensure that they pay the contributions of their employees since this will show to world the state of all employers’ payment.

Employees must ensure they are registered with the Scheme and their NIS deductions made and handed over and there is a responsibility to ensure NIS records are accurate,” she added.

She also stressed the need for persons to ensure they get their permanent NIS numbers so as to guarantee better accuracy within the system.

Meanwhile, Dr. Surendra Persaud also acknowledged that even with this new feature in place there still remains room for inaccuracy.

To this end, he committed the Scheme’s willingness to ensuring that all records are correct.

NIS will also be looking to make provision in its 2016 budget to set up its Legal Unit and restructure its inspection unit to offer support to the number of queries that are likely to pour in.

Dr.Persaud said there is also the need for the more than half on inactive registered self employed persons to ensure that they make their contributions.

Employers are also being reminded that in keeping with the 2015 national budget, the contribution rate is now 14% with effect from September 1. Rate for persons under 16 years and over 60 years remain at 1.5%
