Newly Commissioned Officers of the Guyana Defence Force who recently completed the Standard Officers Course and the Reserve Officers Course received their instruments of Commission today after subscribing to their oath of service.

The new Officers were told by the President that as they begin their new military careers and take on supervision of other ranks, they need to be reminded that Guyana is a country that promotes peace and one that wants good relations with its neighbours.

“I wish to emphasize that our policy is to pursue good neighbourly relations. Our Republic will not provoke confrontation or aggression. We believe in peace and repose our trust in the rule of international law. We live in an interdependent world where there is a high risk of economic and environmental challenges. The Defence Force must be ready at all times to lend support in the event of natural disasters or other emergencies”, President Ali said.

The new 2nd Lieutenants were also encouraged to rise to the challenges that they are likely to face in their military career. They were told to hold firm to their character and accept the responsibilities that will lie before them.

“Your future belongs to you. With good behaviour, good action and staying honest, staying faithfully to the oath you too today will ensure that your journey through this prestigious institution will be one that will be fulfilling, and rewarding and one that will bring to you and your families, great admiration for the service you will give”.

President Ali said the Government will continue to look at the best possible prospects to further improve the lives of those in service to country.
