The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali Hack, today announced that it has disposed of some 310 cases this year, with the majority of those cases being related to murder.
In a release today, the DPP office said that it looked at 100 cases for the offence of Murder, 16 cases of Manslaughter as well as a number of cases for Sexual offences, attempt murder, Conspiracy to commit murder, Accessory after the fact to murder, felonious wounding and wounding with intent.
Two hundred of those cases were tried in the High Courts in Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo and 110 were discontinued by the DPP.
Of the 200 cases, 130 were presented at the Demerara Assizes, 26 at the Berbice Assizes and 44
at the Essequibo Assizes.
According to the DPP’s release, it managed to secure 29 convictions and 94 guilty pleas, while there were 39 not guilty verdicts by jury, 44 formal verdicts of not guilty,2 hung juries and 1 Aborted trial.
ln 2025, the DPP’s Office said it received over 220 Committal Documents.
A total of 19 of those cases were discontinued because of insufficient evidence.
Further, the DPP’s Office proffered legal advice in 4,060 police files received from the Guyana Police Force.
It was noted that the Demerara January 2026 Criminal Assizes will open on Tuesday 13th January 2026, with 126 cases listed to be heard before Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh, Justice Gino Persaud, Justice Simone Morris and Justice Hessaun Yasin.
Of those 126 cases, 30 are for the offence of Murder, 7 for Manslaughter, 11 for attempted Murder, 1 for the offence of Trafficking in Narcotics and 77 cases for Sexual Offences to be heard by 1 Judge in the Sexual Offences Court.
Additionally, the DPP office said it appeared in 43 matters in the Court of Appeal.
Of the 43 matters, 20 were for bail pending appeals against convictions and sentence. 12 of these were denied, 6 granted and 2 were withdrawn.
