Over 17,000 new COVID-19 cases recorded in 3 weeks

More than 17,000 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of January representing the highest number of infections recorded since the pandemic came to Guyana.

The country has also recorded 79 deaths since the start of this month, with 23 of those deaths confirmed in the past three days alone.

The continuing spread of the virus across the country has triggered calls for the government to put systems in place to stem the spread.

Over the weekend, political party A New and United Guyana urged the government to implement new measures to address the spread in COVID-19 cases.  The party noted that while there has been no rapid increase in deaths, the increase in hospitalizations and spread remains a cause for concern.

The main Opposition APNU+AFC has been calling for stricter measures for several weeks as the caseload continues to climb. The Opposition has also roasted the government for restricting PCR testing at government health institutions, saying that move could result in a greater spread and people being unaware of their true status.

The government has not reacted to the calls by the Opposition parties.
