Over $5M in smuggled chicken, alcoholic beverages and cigarettes seized in Corentyne

The Guyana Revenue Authority announced today that its Customs agents seized a large quantity of smuggled foreign chicken, cigarettes, and un-customed alcoholic beverages.

The GRA said its Law Enforcement Investigations Division agents in a joint operation with the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) made the seizure at number 66. Village in Corentyne, Berbice.

The seized items carry a value of $5.5 million and were found in a vehicle, the GRA said.

According to the the GRA, the smuggling suspects escaped as the officers were approaching them, leaving the illegal stock behind.

All of the items have been seized, as the investigations continue.

“GRA wishes to remind the public of its “zero tolerance” approach to smuggling, and anyone who attempts to import or export goods with intent to defraud the Revenue Authority of any duties is guilty of an offence and may be liable to penalties and/or imprisonment in accordance with Section 218 of the Customs Act Chapter 82:01,” the GRA said in a statement.

The Revenue Authority is also asking the public to report any illicit, unlawful or smuggling activities. The information will be kept in strict confidence, the GRA promises.
