Police Corporal and alleged accomplice charged in large marijuana bust case

A Police Corporal, who was based in Berbice , and a Berbice resident were today charged with being in possession of more than 100 pounds of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

The two were busted earlier in the week with the marijuana in the trunk of a car they were in.

In Court today, the Attorney for Police Corporal Quincy Bacchus claimed that on the day of the bust, the Policeman was driving from Berbice to Georgetown when he offered a ride to the other accused, Ramu Singh.

The Attorney said the Policeman had no idea the large bags Singh was carrying contained marijuana.

But the Prosecution told the Court that the vehicle was nabbed in South Ruimveldt following a tip-off to the Police.

The investigators were told that the Policeman who was dressed in his uniform was using his privilege to traffic marijuana. It was revealed that there were several very large parcels of the marijuana found in the vehicle and both men were arrested.

In Court today, the other accused, Ramu Singh was unrepresented. He was remanded to jail on the marijuana trafficking charge while the Policeman was granted bail in the sum of $300,000. Both men will make their next Court appearance later this month.
