Police depending on intel driven operations to recapture remaining escapees

Police investigators are continuing their intel driven operations in Linden in pursuit of recapturing prison escapee, Royden Williams aka Royden Durant.

Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken said on Monday that the policing posture in this regard continues not only in Linden and other Region 10 areas but throughout the country.

He could not say with certainty whether Williams was still in the mining town following an armed confrontation with police two weeks ago.

“We have a posture in Linden which is intel driven […] we are not ruling out the possibility that he is still in Linden and we are also not ruling out that he may not be in Linden. We have a posture throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.

Williams was spotted in Linden two Saturdays ago. During a confrontation with the police himself and escapee Uree Varswyk returned fire, however, Varswyk was fatally wounded.

Three escapees remain on the run and the Guyana Police Force continues to rely on citizens to assist them with any information that could lead to the arrest of the escapees.

Williams and Varswyk along with others escaped from the Georgetown prison while shooting dead one prison officer and wounding several others.

During the Sunday unrest, fire was also set to the buildings which almost completely destroyed the facility.

The rebuilding process has commenced.
