The Speaker of the National Assembly was forced to call in the Police this afternoon after a personal laptop belonging to Opposition Member of Parliament, Cathy Hughes was reported stolen.
Hughes said she left her Apple Macbook in her bag along with other documents for the budget debates in the Parliamentary chamber as they took a lunch break at noon.
When the Assembly was reconvened for the afternoon session, the former Minister discovered the laptop missing from her bag, while other documents were still there.
An upset Speaker, Manzoor Nadir, threatened to have everyone in the compound searched if the laptop was not found. He said he found it very distressing that something like that would happen in the Parliamentary Chamber. He said the security cameras inside the Chambers are not working presently.
Members of Parliament would usually leave their bags and documents behind when on short breaks. In addition to parliamentary staff, the compound has several police officers, security agents and bodyguards for government officials present.
The probe is ongoing.
