The Alliance For Change today said it had no plans to use the Courts to challenge anything that it might have concerns about with the local government elections because that would be a tactic to question local democracy and delay the elections.

AFC Region Four District Chairman, Michael Leonard, told a media conference today that the party is confident of doing well at the upcoming elections and is not afraid of the PPP and its many efforts to attack his party.

Yesterday, High Court Judge, Narendra Singh, dismissed a PPP challenge to one of the AFC nomination lists for the elections.

The AFC today welcomed the Judge’s ruling, saying it was “not unexpected” since the party finds the PPP’s claim of fraud by its candidates and supporters as ironic, since the same PPP was forced to pull out of one of the elections in Wakenaam after it was realised the party’s candidates list there had the names of several dead persons as supporters.

“The PPP’s recent legal challenge is one in a string of hostile positions towards the judiciary, with the party’s leader only recently turning his attention to and attempting to bring the CCJ into disrepute. The PPP has also reactivated its dirty tricks of internet ghost operators who are charged with creating nasty fake news and propagating it on the social media platforms”, Mr. Leonard said.

He noted that his party will continue to run a clean campaign. According to the AFC Executive Member, the party has told its candidates across the country to remain focused on the issues and “continue running a clean campaign”.

Leonard said “the recent Court actions are geared to deter competition and delay elections. The PPP hates local democracy and self government. The evidence is over two decades in government and only holding a single LGE”.

In a statement last evening, the PPP said it is disappointed with the Judge’s ruling. The party maintains that a number of persons who nominated AFC candidates for the elections were tricked into doing so. The party has not said whether it intends to appeal the Judge’s decision.

But according to the AFC Region Four District Chairman, the PPP is acting like a “scared cat” with its back against the wall gazing at defeat.

Local Government elections will take place on November 12.
