When the PPP returns to the National Assembly this afternoon, it will be doing so while “firing on all cylinders”, according to the party’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee.
At his Monday morning press conference, Rohee who was already dressed for the return to the House, said the PPP intends to play a significant role with the way the country’s business will be done as it moves to represent to the over 202,000 who voted for the party at the May 11 elections.
“We are going in there in this debate firing on all cylinders. We are all well prepared, having respect to the fact that we have 23 years of government behind us and we are fully acquainted with the issues, and even though some of the comrades who were Ministers in the previous government will not be returning, this will not mean that we are handicapped”, Rohee said.
He said the Guyanese public can expect a well combative and well-informed opposition that will be representing the issues well.
Mr. Rohee promised that the debate on varying issues will be “constructive and robust”
Among the main issues the PPP intends to tackle in parliament will be the state of the Guyanese economy. He said since the Minister of Finance dealt with “everything under the sun” during his presentation, the PPP expects that it will be allowed to raise political and other issues during the debate.
This will be the first time that the PPP will be in parliament since it lost power at the May 11 elections. The party won 32 seats at the elections and was sent packing to the opposition side of the house. Former President Bharrat Jagdeo will lead the party back to Parliament.
The party will be in parliament without the presence of its last Presidential Candidate, Donald Ramotar and Prime Ministerial Candidate Elisabeth Harper.
Both Ramotar and Harper turned dow offers to join the PPP in parliament. There are reports that former President Ramotar decided not to go to the National Assembly after the party executive decided that Jagdeo will be the Leader of the Opposition.
The recently presented budget is the first budget of the new APNU+AFC government and it represents the budget for the next four months.
