PPP more open to work in the Parliament with APNU than WIN on national interest matters -says Jagdeo

With the WIN party set to become the main Opposition in the new Parliament, the General Secretary of the governing People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo, this afternoon hinted that his party will be more open to work with the APNU over the WIN party on national interest matters, due to the PPP and APNU having a historical common understanding on those matters.

For the first time, the PNC-led APNU will not hold the majority opposition as the PPP is in Government. The party has been reduced to garnering the third highest number of votes based on the declared district results.

Mr. Jagdeo told reporters this afternoon that he believes the APNU miscalculated the WIN party and its possible influence, but he was quick to add that his party remains more open to working with the APNU.

“There was always room for collaboration on national issues with APNU nationally, because we tend to have a more patriotic position, we always saw the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country as invaluable and I think we have a common understanding, I am not so sure about the WIN party, they are transactional, the link with Maduro is still not fully explored, but APNU has to do its own homework,” Mr. Jagdeo said.

Mr. Jagdeo believes that although the WIN party showed that it was a potential threat, the APNU focused all of its energy on the PPP, even as WIN was creeping around its support base.

“We knew that they were going to become the third force in Parliament, we said this to many of their leaders because we saw it coming what took place, and there was no surprise on elections night as I had send then when the statement of polls started to coming in that it will be tough for the APNU and it was tough for them and it didn’t catch us by surprise,” Mr. Jagdeo stated.

As its main political rival since independence, Mr. Jagdeo said he is sympathetic that the party has fallen.

“In a way I feel sorry for them, but their hatred of the PPP clouded good sense”, Jagdeo stated.

Mr. Jagdeo believes that the PNC leader spent too much time attacking the PPP, rather than supporting his historical support base.

He said the PNCR leader has some introspection to do, over the state of the party that he has presided over for the last few years.
