Former National Cyclist, Alanzo Greaves dies in Mandela Avenue accident

Former national cyclist, Alanzo Greaves, died tragically late last night after losing control of his Ducati motorcycle while riding just behind the Botanical Gardens on Mandela Avenue.

The 36-year-old from Kitty had just left a hangout with friends, when the accident occurred.

A police report said based on its investigations, Greaves was proceeding south along the eastern side of Mandela Avenue at a fast rate, when he lost control of his motorcycle causing it to veer in a south-easternly direction where the front wheel came into contact with a heap of mud that was on the edge of the road beyond the continous white line.

The Police said Greaves sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Emergency Medical Technicians arrived on the scene and found the man in an unconscious state. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A few years ago, another motorcycle accident left Greaves badly injured, which led to the end of his cycling career. He was well respected in the cycling fraternity during his competitive years, and today the Guyana Cycling Federation and the Guyana Olympic Association extended their condolences, as they remembered him as a fierce competitor and champion cyclist. President Irfaan Ali also extended his condolences to the man’s family.

Greaves was the father of three children.
