PPP raises several concerns with GECOM over vote recount

With the recount of vote set to commence soon as a CARICOM team is already on the ground to observe the process, the People’s Progressive Party is raising a number of concerns of its own about some of the procedures to be in place for the recount.

The Guyana Elections Commission hosted a meeting on Saturday with officials from the political parties.

At the meeting, PPP Executive Member and Candidate, Attorney Anil Nandlall said his party once again pushed for the Chairperson of the Elections Commission to reconsider the live streaming of the recount process. Mr. Nandlall’s position is that the livestream would lend to the transparency of the recount.

All of the political parties will be allowed agents in each of the workstations for the recount. Additionally, local and international observers will be present along with staff from the Elections Commission.

Still, Nandlall said the live video stream would be important and he does not believe it is against the law.

Another issue of concern that was raised by the PPP representative was the issue of security. He said his party would like to see the Police Force, which will be in charge of security, being supplemented “by some other agency”.

Mr. Nandlall said he does not believe the Police Force alone should be in charge of security arrangements for the process.

Additionally, Nandlall said his party has some concerns about the actual recount process and the processes it will will entail.

“We also raised the question of why you are expanding the scope of the process to check off things like the list of electors who were ticked by the Presiding Officers. What is the purpose of that? Why are you going to go open envelopes of unused ballots and counting it. what we canvassed for is a recount of the ballots cast, nothing else”

The PPP Executive Member also said the stakeholders should be allow to accompany the containers with the ballot boxes from their storage to the place of recount and then accompany the ballot boxes into the recount rooms.

He said he is hoping that the Elections Commission will address their concerns.

The Elections Commission also met on Saturday with the CARICOM team and is likely to gazette recount order on Monday, which will pave the way for the start of the process.
