The Opposition, People’s Progressive Party Civic is laying blame for the current flooding in the city at the doorsteps of the new administration.
The PPP which was booted out of office two months ago after 23 years, is convinced that the governing coalition is focusing in the wrong areas.
In a statement, last evening as flood waters started to rise , the PPP said “the manifestation of the APNU+AFC Administration’s incompetence is once again the burden of the citizenry as they are forced to grapple with flooding despite millions of dollars being expended by government to clean up the city.”
But it was the PPP administration that rolled out an ambitious $1 Billion dollar clean up project last year and early this year before the elections. And it was also under the PPP that the country saw some of the worst floods it has ever experienced.
Still, the party that was in charge of the government for nearly over two decades is accusing the coalition that has been in government for just over two months of not doing enough to tackle the problem.
The PPP said “a preliminary assessment of the situation has indicated the likelihood of a significant impact on the population who will be forced to sleep tonight in dampened conditions, inclusive of flooded bottom- houses and restrictions on their movement. Businesses already experiencing a volatile economic situation are likely to further hampered by loss sales and millions of dollars in damages as a result of flooding. “
“Even as the APNU+AFC Administration proffers ‘ensuring efficiency’ as an explanation for its targeted dismissals and witch-hunting using forensic audits, it appears that its vigilance has not been extended to the operations of the Hamilton Green led Georgetown Mayor and City Council which is the embodiment of corruption, mismanagement and inefficiency”, the party statement added.
The PPP which did not call local government elections for 20 of its 23 years in office, said it is deplorable that even though Citizens and businesses continue to pay millions of dollars in taxes to the Georgetown City Council, there is little or no relief as every time it rains Georgetown floods “while Mayor Green and his support cast throw up excuses after excuses.”
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) statement said the opposition party wants the Granger-led APNU+AFC Administration to extend its forensic audit to the operations of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council “for the sake of saving us from ultimate disaster.”
