President announces $50,000 one-off cash grant for Persons living with disabilities

As Guyana joined the rest of the world today in observing International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities, President Irfaan Ali announced a one-off $50,000 cash grant for persons living with disabilities. The grant is to be paid before the end of this month.

The President told an event to mark the day that his government will continue to protect the rights and dignity of persons living with disabilities.

In the coming months and years, he said, there will be a number of measures that will be announced for persons living with disabilities, which will include special support for house lot and home ownership, financial subsidies, including support for child care cost and special tax incentives for parents of children with disabilities.

There will also be special incentives for and grants for caregivers among other things.

“In addition, I am pleased to announced that a one-off grant of $50,000 be paid to every disabled person before the end of this month, providing direct financial support, totaling, $1.4B to PWD’s in this initiative alone, the most vulnerable in our society, benefiting more than 27,000 persons,” the President said.

The President said since 2020 the government has been committed to the task of transforming its vision of an inclusive society into a tangible reality for all citizens including those living with disabilities.

“Through these and other measures in the coming months and years, my government will continue to create and generate tangible advantages and benefits for (Persons living with disabilities) especially through empowering and self-fulfilling opportunities for meaningful work and earning opportunities.

Additional measures are to be announced soon in an effort to improve the lives of persons living with disabilities.

“Looking ahead, our commitment extends to ensuring no child is deprive of an education, through the expansion of special needs school and special classrooms. We are retrofitting public buildings for access, providing free healthcare and prosthetic support. Through our ‘One Guyana’ initiative we are developing a comprehensive database which will tailor our interventions,” the President noted.

President Ali said the Government’s mission is to create an environment where the disabled can fully participate in all aspect of national life and contribute to the nation’s growth.
