President encourages UK investors to take closer look at Guyana and the Caribbean

President Irfaan Ali met with the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles today as he continued his official visit to the United Kingdom. The President held brief talks with the Prince on various issues related to Guyana.

On Wednesday, the President met and held talks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Over the past three days, the President has been trying to lure more UK investors to Guyana.

During an address to the Caribbean Council’s House of Lords Annual Reception last evening in London, the President said there are lots of resources available in Guyana for investment.  He said the United Kingdom would make a strong investment partner.

“Once you have a big idea, I can tell you there is an opportunity, go to the agencies, seek out the agencies and if you can’t do it alone remember consortiums are not harmful and local companies must be part of those consortiums,” President Ali noted.

According to the President, despite Guyana’s growing oil and gas sector, the economy would be multifaceted. The Government, he added, will use the resources to invest in other sectors including infrastructure expansion, ICT, tourism, health, and education under a new wave of development.

“Just to let you know in Aquaculture we are 2.15 times more competitive than any other country in the region and this includes South America. The market size for the U.S alone is over US$500m for shrimp and shrimp products. We have all the natural attributes for investment and I can go through the whole list from bauxite, gold, and everything,” the President noted.

But even as these opportunities are available in Guyana, the President said, Guyana’s success must also be the Caribbean’s success. He said investors must also look to the Caribbean given its tremendous market access.

“The prosperity of Guyana; must rebound to the prosperity of the region, CARICOM family. And from a policy level and a political level, enough interest is not placed on the Caribbean, the Caribbean is only approached as voting mechanisms sometimes…but what is needed now is a new development of the relationship a new perspective and renewed interest,” President Ali told the forum.

Earlier this week, the President addressed an investment seminar.  He is expected to hold a number of other meetings before his return to Guyana.
