President highlights gains of PPP Government and dismisses discrimination claims at Congress Opening

President Irfaan Ali used the opening of his party’s congress today to once again shut down claims that his Government has been openly practicing discrimination. He dismissed the claims, and said the Government’s record is there for all to see that it is open, transparent and works in the interest of all Guyanese.

At the PPP’s 32nd delegates congress opening at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre, the President said the Government and the party must be defended against false narratives.

“Since we came into government, if you look at our budgetary allocations you will see that we practiced what we preach. If you look at the budgetary allocations per region, you will see, you will see that we practiced what we preach, one people, one future, one country,” the President stated.

The President, who used more than half of his speaking time reflecting on the tenure of the former government, said the PPP is in a much better place now and the Government and the party will only get stronger.

He said the Government has been pushing its development agenda across the country, adding that while the Opposition claims discrimination, the Government has been channeling more spending to even the communities that are considered strongholds of the Opposition.

“The highest level of subsidy in the country is given to the workers and families of Region 10 in cash transfer to subsidize electricity in that Region,” the President stated.

To further make his point, the president told the more than three thousand party delegates that the restoration of water and electricity subsidies as well as the reduction and phasing out of some taxes benefitted all Guyanese.

He also boasted about the increase in public assistance and old age pension and return of the joint services bonus.

“Where is the damn discrimination? Stop this nonsense, get on the agenda of one Guyana, building a future that is strong, resilient and sustainable for all the people of Guyana,” Mr. Ali noted.

Almost weekly the governing People’s Progressive Party has found itself responding to claims that its Government is discriminatory in some of its policies, including the awarding of contracts and the sidelining of persons who are not aligned to the party. The party continues to dismiss those claims as opposition propaganda.
