Teixeira brushes aside Opposition’s criticism over PPP flag being flown at Arthur Chung Convention Centre during party congress

The governing People’s Progressive Party is not moved by concerns about the flying of its party flag at the Arthur Chung Conference Center, which is the current home to the National Assembly of Guyana.

The party’s 32nd delegates congress is currently underway, and its flags have been flying high along the East Coast highway as well as on all the flag poles at the Conference Centre.

On Saturday, the Opposition condemned the PPP for flying its party’s flags and symbols throughout the country outside of election periods and specifically for displaying their flags on the Arthur Chung Convention Centre, which is currently being used as the Parliament of Guyana.

“This blatant disregard for established laws and international conventions not only undermines the principles of decency and democracy but also sets a dangerous precedent that prioritizes party interests over national unity and respect for the rule of law,” the Opposition Leader said.

But in response, longtime PPP Executive Member and Current Government Minister, Gail Teixeira dismissed the concerns and criticisms and said the party’s flag will be flown at anytime and anywhere.

“We will fly our flags inside or outside of an elections because we are the true party of the people. So Mr. Norton, he has a problem, so wish him luck, but we know with the programme we are delivering we will win in 2025,” Teixeira stated.

She said the Opposition is in no position to tell the government where and when to fly its flag, since the Opposition, when it was in government had its flags flown at state institutions. She went as far as to say that Guyanese were not receiving services from government, if they were clad in red when conducting business.

“The leader of the Opposition has brought out a statement, saying that the PPP is violating constitutional law and democracy by putting up our flags, our party flags, on the convention center and across the country, what nonsense!  They got short memories, they got short memories,” Teixeira stated.

Concern has also been mounted about members of the Presidential Guard being made to wear red t-shirts with the “One Guyana” logo while on duty at the PPP Congress, providing security for the President, Prime Minister and Vice President.

The party will wrap up its congress today, where it is expected to elect its new 35- member Central Committee.
