President Irfaan Ali has extended a hand to all Guyanese to begin working with him to move the country forward.
In his inauguration address at the National Cultural Centre before a large audience, the President said he will serve as the President for all Guyanese including those who did not support him at the recent elections.
“My first and last responsibility will be to the people of Guyana – all of them. From this day forward, our one nation and our people must join together to peacefully transition our country to a pathway of economic and social development at home, and respect and regard abroad”, President Ali said.
He said in to ensure that no one is left behind in the government’s journey to prosperity, citizens must be each other’s keeper.
The President assured that his victory at the elections will be transformed into a victory for all Guyanese who aspire to a vibrant nation that delivers benefits for all.
“To those of you, who may not have supported me, I also thank you for your adherence to democracy and the rule of law. And, I promise one and all – those who supported me and those who didn’t – that I will be the President for all the people of Guyana, and I will serve each of you with affection, without discrimination and with every attention to fairness and equity”.
Mr. Ali said in his service to the nation, he will not see a nation divided by ethnicity; but prefers to see one that is cemented in unity.
He noted that every citizen has rights and will be treated equally as his government gets down to work.
The President also laid out some of his immediate plans for the new government. Those plans include more help for the public as the spread of COVID-19 continues, efforts to develop the struggling sugar industry and the use of oil wealth.
President Ali said he will serve without fear or favour.
The inauguration ceremony was peppered with performances from a number of local artistes and dancing troupes as well as the Police Force Band. The President of neighbouring Suriname and his wife were among the special guests.
