Public consultations on parking meters to take place this week

Public consultations on the parking meter system for Georgetown are set to begin this week, as a City Council team continues its efforts to renegotiate the contract for the parking meter system in Georgetown with Smart City Solutions.

The negotiating team is headed by Councillor Malcolm Ferreira. It has been meeting with parking meter company officials and other stakeholders over the past few weeks.

The team is now expected to engage the Private Sector Commission and the Movement Against Parking Meters, as well as mini bus owners and taxi drivers.

On Thursday, a wider consultation will be held with citizens of Georgetown.

Just over 2 months ago, the government suspended the project amidst protests and criticism against the City Council over the contract and the way in which the parking meter system was introduced.

There are still calls for the entire contract to be scrapped and for there to be a new process to select interested parties for the introduction of parking meters.
