The Guyana Teachers’ Union has announced that it has reached agreement with the parking meter company, Smart City Solutions, and teachers will not have to pay for parking while they are at school teaching the nation’s children.
Additionally, parking meters that were placed in front of schools will be completely removed.
The President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Mark Lyte, made the announcement on his Facebook page today.
“Those schools where parking meters have been placed already will see them being removed. We wish to thank the Mayor and City Council along with Smart City Solutions for granting our request as a union for the removal of parking meters in front of schools”, Lyte said.
Several teachers raised concern about the parking meters after noticing that some were being erected in front of city schools in the parking zones. Smart City Solutions, at first, wanted to offer a 35% discount for teachers, but the teachers held firm to their position that they should not be paying for parking while teaching the nation’s children.
They raised the issue with the Prime Minister and other government officials during a recent meeting and the parking meter company, eventually caved on its plans.
