Queenstown man granted bail on land sale fraud charge

Sixty-two year old Queenstown resident, Harry Baptiste was placed on $200,000 bail on Tuesday after being charged in a $2 million fraud case.

Baptiste appeared before the Chief Magistrate and the charge was read to him. The Prosecution’s case is that he collected $2 million in cash from Audrey Mootoosammy, as payment for the purchase of a plot of land in Providence.

The complaint said, the defendant presented himself to the woman as the owner of the land, when it really belonged to someone else.

The woman allegedly handed over the money but later realized that the man did not own or hand any links to the plot of land that was sold to her.

After a police complaint was made, Baptiste allegedly made an attempt to end the matter by promising the woman that he would have paid her back the money. She was never given her money back and decided to move ahead with the case.

The matter is set to continue on February 22, 2017.
