Republic Bank Guyana Limited is expected to play a greater role in supporting social projects this year through its “Power to Make A Difference” social investment programme.

Speaking at a media cocktail on Friday night, the Managing Director of Republic Bank Guyana, Richard Sammy, announced that during 2016, the bank’s social project will be extended to incorporate initiatives that deal with environmental literacy and addressing the issue of teen pregnancy.

Mr. Sammy said the bank will also continue to focus on youth development, strengthening Guyana’s rich cultural heritage through music and the performing and visual arts. Under the Make A Difference project, the bank will also add its voice to autism awareness in Guyana.

“Through our vibrant Staff Volunteerism Movement, our staff are keenly engaged in several community initiatives”, the Managing Director said.

He also announced that Republic Bank intends to play a major role as a partner in Guyana’s celebration of its 50th Independence anniversary, both at the national level and at the regional level through its banking network.

On the business side, Mr. Sammy said the bank looks forward to more growth and development. As part of an expansion drive, the bank will be opening a new branch at Triumph on the East Coast of Demerara and there will also be the upgrade of the bank’s facilities across the country.

Republic Bank has been performing well across the region and saw profits topping US$194 Million in 2015.

Just recently, the Bank was forced to shoot down alleged involvement in money laundering when a Kaieteur News report named the bank in a complaint by a private company, that had claimed that it came across millions of dollars being transferred to its account that did not belong to the company. Republic Bank in a statement supported by the Central Bank of Guyana, said the story was false and there was never such a transfer. The Bank intends to take some legal action in the matter.

The Managing Director told the media on Friday evening that while that situation is regrettable, the experience has underscored the importance of the bank’s commitment to integrity and professionalism, “as these core values allow us to maintain the confidence of our stakeholders”.

The General Manager for Group Marketing and Communications at Republic Bank, Michelle Palmer-Keizer explained that the bank continues to make great achievements.

She pointed to Republic Bank recently being awarded as the Bank of the Year for the Caribbean by the world-renowned, “Latin Finance” publication.

Ms. Palmer-Keizer said the bank remains committed to charting the course expected of the Caribbean Institution of choice.

Republic Bank’s Guyana history spans more 175 years. It currently has 11 branches across the country.
