Second Police Constable charged over leak of video recordings from Police Command Centre

A 24-year-old Police Constable, Ashton Chappelle, was today charged and remanded to prison with obtaining and giving electronic data relating to the national security of the state, in contravention of the Cyber Crime Act.

The Police Constable was arrested last Friday and taken before the Court today at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs.

The charge is related to the alleged download and copying of video recordings from the Police Force’s Command Centre for the Safe Country programme. Chappelle is the second Police Constable to be charged in connection with the alleged download and removal of the video recordings.

The recordings are related to the incident involving the Head of the Special Branch, Prem Narine and Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed.

The Police suspect that Chappelle might have downloaded the video recordings and provided them to the other Police Constable, who is accused of allegedly making the recordings available to the Opposition Leader, and allegedly collecting a bribe.

The matter was adjourned to November 24, 2026.
