Security guard shot dead by Police during alleged armed confrontation in Vigilance

A 39-year-old security guard from Vigilance was shot dead by the Police on Tuesday during what has been described by the Police as an armed confrontation.

The Guyana Police Force reported this morning that a party of Police ranks were in the Vigilance area on Tuesday afternoon when they were stopped by a 27-year-old man who complained that the security guard, Michael Britton, had threatened to shoot him.

The Police said the 27-year-old man led officers to an area in the community and pointed out Britton to them. The Police claim that after calling out to the security guard, he started to run.

The Police said the ranks gave chase and during that chase, it is alleged that Britton opened fire on the ranks while running away from them.

The Police said the ranks returned fire, as Britton jumped a number of fences in his runaway bid. Eventually, the 39-year-old security guard fell to the ground, and when ranks caught up with him, a bullet wound was noticed on his side. The Police said the man was picked up and placed in the back of a Police vehicle and rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The Police said a teenager from the same Vigilance community was taken to the hospital, after he was grazed by a bullet during the confrontation between the Police ranks and the security guard.

Police investigators have reported that a 9MM pistol, along with four (4) rounds in the magazine and one 9MM round in the breach of the firearm, were found at the scene. The Police did not indicate whether any spent shells were found after the alleged shootout.

The ranks involved in the shooting death are facing investigation, the Police Force said.
