Persons applying for new and renewed passports could find themselves waiting for as long as 40 days to get the new document.
The Central Immigration and Passport Office has reported that it has been snagged by a number of setbacks caused by shipping delays.
In a release, it was explained that while there have been unusual delays in the issuance of the Guyanese passport, the delays are as a result of factors beyond the control of the Passport Office.
“The COVID-19 pandemic and other recent world events have caused disruption of countless supply chains. The Guyana Police Force’s Central Immigration and Passport Office has been affected by this disruption in the supply chain of material,” the Passport Office said.
It was noted that the office continues to provide passports and other immigration document-related services and is attempting to do so within the regular five working days period, despite the shortages.
The delayed shipment is expected in Guyana in late August and the situation should return to a state of normalcy by then.
“While the delay is inevitable, the Central Immigration and Passport Office remains unwavering in its commitment to work assiduously to ensure that things are back to normal at the shortest possible time,” the Passport Office said.
Earlier this week, a number of persons complained on social media about the long delays. The Passport Office, which falls under the Guyana Police Force, only provided information about the delays when News Source raised the issue.
