Social Cohesion Minister urges Opposition to set aside differences in the name of national unity

In the face of mounting criticism from the Opposition, Social Cohesion Minister Amna Ally utilized a large chunk of her presentation in the National Assembly on Thursday to defend and clarify the role of her Ministry.

Minister Ally praised the vision of President David Granger for establishing the Ministry of Social Cohesion when he took office in May 2015 and said only a visionary would be appreciative of the initiative.

“Only a person with warp thinking will rename it the ministry of social bribery,” she added.

The Government Chief Whip said her Ministry will not fail to promote a peaceful and inclusive society for sustainable development.

She said citizens can also expect better access to justice even while efforts continue towards building accountable and effective institutions at all levels. “We will foster a peaceful and exclusionary society and will lead a national process geared towards addressing issues of exclusion and marginalization in society,” Ally added.

To this end, the Minister said every citizen is needed in order to make social cohesion work, all while extending an olive branch to the Peoples Progressive Party opposition.

“I urge those honourable members on the other side to set differences aside, lay our hands to the ploy … and make here a paradise, land of our birth,” the Minister said.

“We will not go down the road of vengeance but let me say now that if you commit a crime then you have to do the time,” Ally added.

She said the achievements of her ministry over the last eight months have been outstanding. “The budget will assist to consolidate the gains already made and expand programs and projects.”

She reminded the National Assembly about the financial and technical support her ministry has received from international bodies such as the United Nations. She described the budget as friendly to the poor and designed to offer everybody the good life that is envisioned by the President.
