At least one category of Guyana Power and Light (GPL) consumers stand to enjoy up to $1.5 million in saving each month as a direct consequence of the rebate offered by the government in the 2016 budget.

Large industrial consumers will save $1.5 million every month while the over 166,000 residential customers will benefit from a $7000 dollars saving monthly. These figures were provided by Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson during his presentation to the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The Minister said the 10,000 commercial consumers on GPL’s grid will also save $36,000 every month. The government said its move to offer the rebate was in keeping with the need to provide incentives to the manufacturing sector, in order for it to become competitive.

It is proposed to increase the rebate granted by the Guyana Power and Light from 10 percent to 15 percent, with effect from April 1, 2016. The rebate is expected to be paid by way of reduction, return, or refund on what has already been paid. Patterson said the savings are anticipated to give boost the productive sectors.

It is a type of sales promotion that marketers use primarily as incentives or supplements to product sales. Consecutive governments continue to promise the provision cheap energy to the Guyanese population and have begun looking to develop hydro power facilities.

Patterson told the House that the Guyana/Brazilian hydro-power initiatives will be vigorously pursued as well as other smaller hydro-power units.
