Police investigators and officials from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission are investigating yet another mining tragedy.
The lifeless body of 35-year-old gold miner, Sherwyn Henry was pulled from a mining pit at Tiger Creek today, more than 18 hours after he was buried alive.
The mining pit that Henry was working in, collapsed and completely covered him on Tuesday afternoon. His fellow miners were forced to abort their search efforts as night came but they launched an early morning search effort today.
It was just after 12:30 this afternoon that the man’s body was found.
The miner’s last known address was in Sophia, Georgetown and Robb Street, Georgetown. His family members have been notified of the tragedy and plans are underway to transport his body to the city.
Guyana has recorded several mining tragedies over the past year as the hunt for gold continues in the interior communities.
Just over a month ago, a Commission of Inquiry completed its probe of mining accidents in the country. Several recommendations have been handed over to the authorities.
