Guyana is currently experiencing record breaking temperatures, even when compared to the hottest years, Specialist Meteorologist, Komalchand Dhiram, has explained.  

Speaking at the Hydromet Service’s National Climate Outlook forum this morning, Dhiram said Guyana has been experiencing warm temperatures since January, which had an extreme spike in August.

He said from all indications so far, there might be hotter days and months ahead.  

“The El nino, we continue to say that approximately 90% chance, that it could go all the way at the ending of March (2027) and then you will see a decline.  Up to January/ February (2027), there is more than an 85% chance that we will have a strong El Ninon not just El Nino,” Dhiram said.

He said the trend is also showing that both day and night times will be hotter, when in past the nights were usually cooler during El Nino.

He likened the current heat conditions to that of the 1950’s when there were hotter days and nights.

“We are experiencing a mean temperature of 30.1 degree Celsius, naturally the mean temperature should be between 26–27-degree Celsius at this time of the year but we are experiencing 30. So, when you look at the nighttime temperature and day time temperature you expect the daytime temperature to go down in the night so that your body could recover but that has not been happening, so this is a record-breaking temperature for us,”Dhiram noted.

And even with an expected rainy season later this year, Dhiram stated that there is likely to below normal rainfall.

“We are now forecasting higher probability for below normal (rainfall), So, there is no chance in our model that we are going to experience wetter conditions or even normal conditions….Beyond that into January to March, we still have the forecast showing the probability of below normal,” He noted.

It was explained that the current weather pattern and projections can also affect crops and livestock. The Hydromet Service continues to urge persons to take the necessary precautions during this time.
