“Sympathy Motion” for former MP Abdul Kadir in no way supported terrorism -Govt. Chief Whip

The Government’s Chief Whip in Parliament, Minister Amna Ally, today made it clear that the sympathy motion that was passed in the National Assembly for its late member Abdul Kadir, who was convicted of a terrorist act in the US, in no way supports terrorism.

Minister Ally said it is the norm and a tradition for the National Assembly to offer its condolences to any former Member who dies.

“It is conventional for when someone dies who served the Guyana Parliament, that we table a sympathy motion”, Ally said.

She said the Government of Guyana does not condone and has never supported any act or form of terrorism and its record proves and supports that position.

According to the Minister, perhaps in the future the National Assembly might have to examine the record of late Members outside of the Assembly, but she noted the sympathy motion is usually specific to the time the member would have served in the Guyana Parliament.

The US Embassy on Monday morning strongly criticized the passage of the sympathy motion, pointing out that it has left a stain on the National Assembly of Guyana.

Kadir and three other men were convicted of conspiring to blow up fuel pipelines at the JFK Airport in New York. Although it was reported during the trial that the plan had no financial backing or support mechanism, the four elderly men were all found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

Kadir died in prison last year. He served as a Member of the Guyana Parliament from 2001 to 2006 and also previously served as a Mayor of Linden.
