Teixeira rubbishes claims of discrimination in Guyana; Declares country being managed in “effective and transparent” way

Minister of Governance Gail Teixeira has responded to claims of discrimination and corruption that were leveled against the Guyana Government at a Guyanese diaspora meeting in New York.

While attacking a number of the Guyanese speakers at the event which was held on Sunday and attended by hundreds of Guyanese, Teixeira said the Government of Guyana is not afraid of facts and is managing the country in an effective and transparent way.

While dodging many of the direct complaints about discrimination in the way the Government has been handling its affairs, the Governance Minister said the ethnic composition of the three branches of Government demonstrate a level of ethnic diversity not seen in the US or other developed countries.

In her statement late last night, the Minister also said the Government has been inclusive in its handling of the affairs of the country since taking office.

She said the PPP/C government has brought economic and social development and lifted Guyana from being one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere to one of the fastest growing economies, adding that its programmes and policies are also people centred.

Teixeira attacked one of the organisers of the New York meeting Rickford Burke as someone who is wanted in Guyana for cyber crimes over statements made on his Facebook page. Burke who is a political activist and community organiser in the US has repeatedly rubbished the allegations leveled against him as political persecution by the PPP government.

She also lashed out at one of the speakers, retired Assistant Commissioner Paul Slowe claiming that as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, he refused to appoint senior officers that were recommended by the Acting Police Commissioner.

It was a senior Officer who halted those promotions when he moved to the Courts even before the promotion list was finalised.

The case was eventually thrown out and it was the current President who suspended the entire Police Service Commission, thereby handicapping its ability to move ahead with police promotions until its time expired.

During the meeting in Brooklyn, the New York State Attorney General Letitia James said there was enough information conveyed at the meeting to warrant a probe of the claims. She has promised to raise the issue with the Joe Biden administration and its Department of Justice.

While not naming the US Attorney General, the Minister of Governance Gail Teixiera in her statement on Monday night said a few local officials in the USA who rely on the electorate of Brooklyn “appear to have fallen prey to the racist propaganda of extortionists and con-men.”

The PPP Civic Government continues to be dogged with repeated claims of discrimination and corruption. The Government has been attempting to fight back those claims by pointing to its development programmmes in communities across the country.
