A local tourist was swept away by strong currents in the Ireng river during a visit to Orinduik Falls on Sunday,
The man who has been identified as Gladstone Haynes was among a group of tourists who visited the site in the company of a local airline and tour operator.
During the visit to Orinduik Falls, the man reportedly made his way out into the water but was suddenly swept away by the strong river current.
A search operation was launched yesterday after an alarm was raised, but it did not yield any results. This morning, members of the GDF Special Forces Unit traveled to the area to assist with the search operation.
A full search and rescue operation is underway, but it may soon be downgraded to a search and recovery effort as hope continues to dim.
The Orinduik waterfall is one of the country’s top tourist destinations and is usually coupled with visits to Kaieteur falls.
