The Guyanese man who went missing at the Orinduik Falls on Sunday during a visit when he was swept away by the water has been identified as a member of the New York Police Department.
The NYPD has confirmed to the New York Post newspaper that Officer Gladstone Haynes who is a Guyanese national, went missing at the waterfall during a vacation visit.
A spokesman for the NYPD has since indicated that the Police Department is assisting local authorities with the investigation.
Haynes was among a group of tourists who visited the site on Sunday in the company of an airline operator. He reportedly stepped out into the water at the falls and was suddenly swept away by the current.
An alarm was raised, but search efforts have so far turned up empty handed.
The Special Forces Unit of the Guyana Defence Force joined the search operations on Monday and has been doing both aerial and on the ground surveillance.
The missing man, Gladstone Haynes, is also the son of popular Guyanese boutique owner, Claire Pires who operates the Clairans’ Store.
